The new integrated battery module concept is using the same 2170 format as tesla and panasonic s new cell but the company is referring to it by the more traditional 21700.

The result was the 2170 lithium ion cell which stretched the length of the cell from 65 mm to 70 mm and increased the diameter of the cell from 18 mm to 21 mm.

At present while there is a huge demand for more energy density for lithium battery the current 18650 cell can t increase much on capacity.

However 18650 cell is very limited by its size volume which is generally between 2 0 2 6ah cell for mass production.
Panasonic corp plans to boost the energy density of 2170 battery cells it supplies to tesla inc by 20 in five years and commercialize a cobalt free version in two to three years.
