Panasonic 2170 Battery Cell

The new integrated battery module concept is using the same 2170 format as tesla and panasonic s new cell but the company is referring to it by the more traditional 21700.

Tesla s older 18650 battery image. The result was the 2170 lithium ion cell which stretched the length of the cell from 65 mm to 70 mm and increased the diameter of the cell from 18 mm to 21 mm. Panasonic has developed new battery technology for the 2170 lithium ion cells it produces and supplies to tesla a change that improves energy density by 5 and reduces costly cobalt content. Charged however all good things must come to an end.

The new 2170 cell which is now being produced at the gigafactory is slightly larger 21 mm by 70 mm. The 2170 cell is around 50 larger by volume than the 18650 but it can deliver almost double the current the 18650 delivers 3 000 ma and the 2170 has been tested at 5 750 6 000 ma. Tesla and panasonic have now developed a new and improved type of cell which will be used in the upcoming model 3. At present while there is a huge demand for more energy density for lithium battery the current 18650 cell can t increase much on capacity.

Panasonic corp plans to boost the energy density of 2170 battery cells it supplies to tesla inc by 20 in five years and commercialize a cobalt free version in two to three years.
